Club HistoryThe Bellevue Girls Select Basketball Club (“The Club”) is an offshoot of the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club program. In 1997, parents took over as coaches and in the day to day management of the program. In 2001 an individual volunteered to chair the program, providing the beginnings of an organizational structure. In 2003, the returning coaches created a Board consisting of 6 parent representatives and 3 coaches to make the transition to a 501 (c)(3) corporation in order to guide it into the future. Program DescriptionThe Club is currently organized as a non profit, 501(c)(3). A board of directors oversees the daily operations. This board consists of two parent representatives per grade level, and one coach representative per grade level. No one person may fulfill dual roles. The Rules and Bylaws of the Club will provide further detailed information as to the operations and guidelines of the Board. These documents are open to any interested party for their review. Parents who are interested in serving on the board should contact the current President of the board to express their interest and discuss possible openings. Parents are welcome to address the board at any time during the monthly meetings, or in person with a private conversation. It is requested that they call the current President and schedule time on the agenda. A roster of current board members is attached to this document. The Club is designated as a feeder program for Bellevue High School Girls basketball program in particular. There is no guarantee of high school team selection. The selected players must live in the Bellevue High School attendance area per the rules of the Puget Sound Traveling League. Until the 2004-5 season, the Club consisted of grades 6 through 8. A 5th grade level was added at that time. There is also a boy’s program that is run under a separate Club program. The number of players per team is set at coach discretion. It will not exceed 12 players per team. The geography of play is the greater Puget Sound area, as the club participates in the Puget Sound Traveling League, which promotes the interest in girls basketball as a competitive sport. This League was started in 1985 when the Bellevue School District elected to drop athletics from its school district programs. The program boundaries span Renton to North Bend and Edmonds. It is an AAU affiliated non profit program. Games abide by the Washington High School basketball general rules of play. The typical time commitment for players includes twice weekly practices, with one to two games per weekend. Four to five tournaments are also played, whose playing rules may be different that the Traveling League’s. The season runs October through mid-March. Uniforms and practice jerseys are provided to the girls for use during the season, and are the property of the Club. The program typically provides individualized sweatshirts to the players, which are the property of the player. At the end of the season, both players and parents will be provided with a program evaluation form that will be returned to the Board. The purpose of the evaluation is to ensure that the Club’s operations adhere to it’s overall mission statement and that we meet our stated objectives. It must always be remembered that the Club has a volunteer focus. Parental involvement and support is necessary in order to maintain it’s vibrancy. |
